It was clear near Länghem in the Tranemo area that March afternoon, when I photographed this common crane. Both the cranes’ arrival and farmers spreading manure are dependable signs of spring here. These birds are magnificent. The smell of manure is rather less so, but it is every bit as reliable a sign of the season.
