Improving the Foundation

Not every productive week results in a new field recording, photograph or film.

Over the past week, much of the work on Nordic Forest Echoes has happened behind the scenes. The goal has been fairly simple: make the site easier to maintain, easier to understand, and more useful as the archive continues to grow.

A lot of time has gone into improving the photography workflow. The tools used to prepare photo pages now produce more varied and context-aware text, while keeping the original IPTC metadata untouched and in control. Navigation between photographs has also been adjusted so that it follows the same order as the archive itself.

There has also been quite a bit of less visible SEO and structural work. Photo pages and blog posts now include improved structured data, while canonical URLs, Open Graph information, pagination and internal linking have been reviewed and corrected where needed.

The newsletter infrastructure is now in place as well. Subscriptions use double opt-in, proper unsubscribe handling and consent tracking, with the public signup integrated into the website rather than exposing the underlying newsletter system directly.

That work also meant revisiting the Privacy Policy, Terms of Use and cookie handling so that everything reflects how the site actually operates.

The Audio Archive has continued to evolve too. The aim is to move away from simple file listings and toward richer pages with clearer categories, recording context and more complete metadata. Older recordings will eventually be imported again using the original field logs wherever possible.

On the technical side, I have also spent time checking cache behaviour, recovery after server restarts and general reliability. SiteOne Crawler has now joined Ahrefs and manual browser testing as part of the routine quality checks.

And finally, a small addition to the global footer now quietly says:

Built & hosted by HardHQ

None of this is especially dramatic from the outside, but it strengthens the foundation underneath Nordic Forest Echoes.

The project is gradually becoming less of a collection of separate photos, recordings and films, and more of a coherent archive with better context, better structure and better tools behind it.

Sometimes progress is a new recording from the forest.

Sometimes it is making sure everything behind it works properly.
