A Macro Walk at Hofsnäs, with Time for Fika
A photo walk at Hofsnäs with my aunt, a fully manual macro lens and several questionable equipment decisions. Three small stories, with time for fika.
This past week has been a quiet one for Nordic Forest Echoes, at least as far as gathering new material is concerned. A fairly spectacular case of man flu has left me with little energy for recording, photography or filming.
There has also been quite a bit of rain. After a dry summer, it is welcome and much needed, even if it hasn’t added much encouragement to pack a bag and head outdoors. Rain does make it easier to sit at the computer without feeling that I should be somewhere else, though. Between resting and feeling sorry for myself, I’ve spent some time working on the website and a few small side projects.
More on those soon.
The other day, I needed to get out. After being indoors with a cold, even a short visit to the forest felt more appealing than another stretch on the sofa.
I left all the equipment at home and decided to look for chanterelles. There were a few to be found, although walking around turned out to be considerably harder than I had hoped. A slight fever and rattling airways were probably good reasons to have stayed home a little longer.
Still, I was glad to have been outside.
There are no photographs or recordings from that outing to share. For once, I went into the forest and came home with a few mushrooms. That was enough.
Back at the computer, much of the work has been about making the existing material easier to find and move through.
The blog now has a sidebar with topics, archives and links between articles. Navigation between photographs has been corrected, and I’ve been refining titles, descriptions and layouts across the site, including how pages work on smaller screens.
These are small changes individually, but they matter when someone wants to linger. Finding another photograph, following a related story or moving through an archive should feel straightforward.
I’ve also added three photographs to the website. They were all taken in spring 2025, so they are new to the archive rather than newly photographed.
The reason was quite practical: some of the photographs featured on the front page were also being used as blog thumbnails. Seeing the same images repeated was making things look a little stale. It seemed a good opportunity to bring a few more photographs out of the collection.
Common Crane in a Field beneath a Blue Sky was taken on 21 March 2025. The crane stands in short, dry grass, its red crown and black-and-white neck markings set against a clear blue sky.
Blue Tit Hanging from a Conifer Branch, photographed on 3 April 2025, catches a blue tit clinging beneath a branch, framed by evergreen needles.
Male Chaffinch Portrait against Green Grass is from 26 April 2025. It is a close portrait with the bird facing the camera, its blue-grey crown and reddish-brown breast standing out against the soft green background.
An indoor week can still bring something to the photo archive. Sometimes it means returning to photographs that have been waiting for their turn.
The largest piece of work is still behind the scenes: a more detailed Audio Archive.
I’m rebuilding the recording pages to bring the sound and its context together more clearly. The aim is to make it easier to browse recordings and learn where they were captured, what the conditions were like and what you are listening to.
This version is still under development and hasn’t replaced the public archive yet. There is more to finish, but it is gradually taking shape.
I’ve also been preparing the first Nordic Forest Echoes newsletter. It will be another way to share photographs, recordings, stories and occasional glimpses of work in progress, with room for the personal notes that sit between finished projects.
There won’t be a promise of something new every week. Some weeks bring new material; others bring rain, a cold and a few improvements made at the computer.
Thank you for following along.
